V&T Railroad and Virginia City

On Friday we had a full day planned. We had tickets for a round trip on the V&T Railroad, which included a 3 hour stop in Virginia City. The train station is located in Carson City so we had a 30 minute drive there before boarding the train. We had a diesel engine for our trip. They use a steam engine on other days of the week apparently. The ride from Carson City to Virginia City took an hour and a half. The conductor narrated along the way about some of the mining history and towns/ruins we could see along the way. We went through several tunnels where it was pitch black. Nate was really good the whole time and didn't mind being in the dark.

Once we got to Virginia City we wandered along the main street to find somewhere to eat. There were lots of shops and saloons and tours and museums to check out. We just stopped places that looked interesting like a shop that sold all sorts of signs and candy. We found a underground mining tour and stopped in a firetruck museum. There wasn't enough time to do it all. 3 hours went by very quickly, but we had a good time.

There was a Mark Twain Museum I wanted to see, but there wasn't time.

A huge safe that was robbed in broad daylight.

Inside the mine.

A real miner. I wonder if he time traveled from the late 1800s.

We will definitely have to go back to Virginia City again to see more like a huge 3 story Victorian schoolhouse and the Mark Twain Museum. Such a neat place. The train ride back was much the same, but everyone did well.

On the way home we stopped for dinner at a really yummy Thai restaurant we discovered. Even Nate likes it. Then off to bed for an early start to head up to the Tahoe area for Tough Mudder the next day.
